Tasting Notes

This wine is 90% Syrah, 4% Grenache, 4% Mourvedre and 2% Graciano, blended from vineyards in both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. The primary vineyards are: Sawyer Lindquist in the Edna Valley; Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley; Ibarra-Young in the Los Olivos District; and Martian Ranch in the newly appointed Alisos Canyon AVA near Los Alamos in the heart of Santa Barbara County. Most of the grapes are from Biodynamic or organic sources. 2019 was a relatively normal growing season, not too hot, not too cool, but just right, with perfect ripening conditions in September and October. The different lots for this wine were fermented separately in small open top fermenters with twice a day manual punch downs, old school traditional techniques. The wine was aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels before blending and bottling in August 2020. It was lightly fined with organic egg whites and given a light filtration for clarity and stability. I’ve been making a version of this wine every year since 1982. My goal with it is to make a savory, drinkable style, with good acidity and balance…a wine that can easily go with many different kinds of food. Syrah goes well with anything you would normally pair a rich red wine with, but I find it goes especially well with food off of the grill…that smoky character suits the wine perfectly! This wine is not meant to put down in the cellar. Sure, it has the structure that would allow aging, but I bottle it with a screw cap for easy access and ultimate drinkability.
